Don’t you just love going on the internet and seeing wholesome photos of twins? Adding to their sheer adorableness, they are often dressed up in the same outfit from head–to–toe, as pop-culture idols, cartoon characters, or cute matching outfits.

The Twin Switch-up

Imagine finding out that your twin was replaced with another. That is something no one would want but unfortunately, it happens. There are around nine confirmed cases where twins have been accidentally switched at birth and then placed with an infant who is not related to them. We only know about nine cases but imagine how many children could actually be living with a family that’s not related to them by blood!

The Generation of Twins

Having twins is not the most common thing. It occurs as a distinct reaction when a fertilized egg divides into two or two eggs get fertilized at the same time which leads to the birth of twins. However, there was a family from Brazil that had 22 sets of identical twins throughout five generations.

No Criminals Caught

In 1929, a case was brought up which accused conjoined twins of carrying out criminal activity. The judge, however, did not punish them as he believed that the other twin was innocent and didn’t deserve to be punished.

Conjoined twins are two babies whose bodies never completely separate in the womb, resulting in the children being physically connected to each other. Thanks to modern medical technology, some of the cases involving conjoined twins are resolved by separating the children when they are still infants.

A Twin Boom

In the year 2018, the U.S. saw the birth of 123,536 twins in a single year. Today, there are about 11 million twins across the globe.

The Conjoined Twins

It is estimated that in 1 in every 200,000 twin births, the newborns are conjoined twins. Additionally, 20% of the total conjoined twins happen to be females.
