Soap bubbles, or their soapy froth, have long been a favorite toy among children. In fact, these delicate orbs appear in a painting by Pieter Bruegel from 1560. The modern method we use to create soap bubbles was a serendipitous invention from 1948. Chemist Rolf Hein, while attempting to develop a new detergent formula, ended up with a mixture that foamed excessively. Adapting to this unexpected outcome, Hein bottled the soapy concoction, added a bubble-blowing ring, and thus “Pustefix” came into existence.
